The aim of the present study was to compare the Rheumatoid factor (RF) titres / positivity tested by semiquantitative slide latex agglutination test (Span Diagnostics Limited) and quantitative nephelometry (Beckman). 182 patients of Rheumatoid Arthritis fulfilling the ARA criteria, were chosen for this study. RF titre of 40 IU/ ml and above was considered positive. 160 (87.90%) and 158 (86.80%) patients tested positive for RF by latex agglutination and nephelometry respectively. 3 patients negative by latex agglutination tested positive nephelometry at values ranging between 40-50 IU/ml; 1 patient with RF titre of 40 IU/ml by latex agglutination was negative by nephelometry. 11 patients (6.04%) gave lower value of RF titre by two or more dilutions by latex agglutination as compared to nephelometry; the reverse was evident in 15 patients (8.24%). A difference of one dilution by latex agglutination when compared to nephelometry results was not considered significant to label as a mismatch in the titre. In 156 (85.70%) patients, the results of Rheumatoid Factor testing by latex agglutination (Span diagnostics) and nephelometry (Beckman) did not differ significantly.
